Dear mountain-loving friends, we have the great pleasure of inviting you to take part in Stage II of ȘTAFETA MUNȚILOR (the Mountain Relay) 2018, organised by Zimbrul Carpatin Pitești!

As every year, we have prepared an interesting competition for you and, since we are in the Centenary year, we looked for a Peak of the Union, one that would unite all the mountain massifs in a single glance. Well, not quite all of them, but on a clear day you will be able to see 5 mountain ranges from the summit!

All tourism and ecology clubs and associations in the country, whether or not affiliated to the Ștafeta Munților Championship, may take part in this Outdoor Challenge-type competition.

Competition date: 6–8 July 2018

Venue: Pensiunea Petruța (the Petruța Guesthouse) on Valea Cheii, in Podu Dâmboviței commune, Argeș County.

Access routes:

- national road 73: Pitești – Câmpulung – Brașov

those coming from Brașov will turn left before the centre of the commune, onto Valea Cheii

those coming from Pitești/Câmpulung will turn right after passing the centre of Podu Dâmboviței commune, entering Valea Cheii.

From the national road, where you will find a sign to Valea Cheii, continue for another 2 km and you will reach Casa Petruța

Competition categories:

Family: teams of 3 members up to 14 years old, regardless of gender, with a chaperone

Juniors: teams of 3 members, 15–20 years old, regardless of gender

Elite: teams of 3 members regardless of age and gender

Open: teams of 3 members regardless of age and gender

Women: teams of 3 members, all of whom must be female

Seniors: teams of 3 members, all aged over 35, regardless of gender

Veterans: teams of 3 members, all aged over 50, regardless of gender

Competition programme:

Friday, 6 July: 8:00 – 22:00 Reception of participants

22:30 Technical briefing with all team captains

24:00 Lights out

Saturday, 7 July:

07:30 Start of the competition events

10:00 – 17:00 Fun events for those remaining in the camp

20:00 Surprise event

21:00 Posting of the results and resolution of appeals

22:00 Cultural event

Sunday, 8 July:

11:00 – Awards ceremony

12:00 – Cleaning of the camp and departure of the participants

Competition events:

MOUNTAIN RAID – a mountain route of medium difficulty, lasting a maximum of 6 hours, with 1,000 m of elevation gain. Participation is in teams of 3 members. Entry to this event is not possible without BOOTS/TRAINERS with a special grippy sole for trekking.

IMPORTANT: the children will have an age-appropriate route and will not reach the summit. The other categories, however, will reach Sântilia Mare Peak, 1,888 m. The FASTEST ascent of the Peak will be rewarded separately.

Points awarded: 10,000 points. Penalties: 10 pts / 1 minute and 500 pts / 1 PFA (unmanned checkpoint)

ORIENTEERING – a speed event on compass bearings, but with graphic assistance. The whole team will enter this event; the finish of the orienteering is the same as the start of the mountain raid event.

IMPORTANT: we will use the electronic timing system patented by Ștafeta Munților, so please use the chips in the manner indicated and take the checkpoints in order so as not to be disqualified.

Points awarded: 5,000 points. Penalties: 1 pt / 1 second

THEORY TESTS – 15 multiple-choice questions about the competition area. All questions are of low difficulty and have ONLY ONE CORRECT ANSWER. You will find the questions on the website www.stafetamuntilor.ro.

IMPORTANT: the theory test will be taken before the other events, in the camp. Each team member will answer 5 questions.

Points awarded: 300 points. Penalties: 20 points / 1 wrong answer

CULTURAL – each club has 15 minutes to present an artistic and humorous performance in which it may reproduce any song with a mountain theme, a sketch and/or a poem.

Points awarded: 1,000 points. Penalties: depending on the marks received, in accordance with the SM (Ștafeta Munților) rules.

SURPRISE EVENT – if it is a surprise, then let it remain so until the moment it takes place.

At the Technical Briefing the organisers will present each event and its rules in detail. The organisers reserve the right to change the order of the events if this is required for objective reasons.

IMPORTANT:

For all compulsory events, the ȘTAFETA MUNȚILOR RULES, which you can find at www.stafetamuntilor.ro, must be strictly observed.

Tents will be pitched in the yard of the Petruța guesthouse, only under the guidance of the organisers. Cars will be parked ONLY in the place indicated by the organisers. Failure to follow the organisers' instructions may result in not being registered for the competition, so please be understanding and follow the instructions received to the letter.

There will be a single fire pit in the camp. Mountain Gendarmerie patrols will be present in the area and will penalise any breaches of the law. So please do not give them reasons to fine you!

The camping FEE is 5 lei/person, and the entrance fee to the Piatra Craiului National Park is 5 lei/person. The fees will be collected by the organiser at the start!

TRADITIONAL MEAL – on Saturday evening, our hosts can offer a traditional meal: Rucăr-style bulz (polenta with cheese) with Dâmbovicioara-style sarmale (cabbage rolls) and dessert, at a price of 35 lei / menu. If you would like it, please confirm the number of people by 3 July!

Compulsory equipment:

individual: trekking boots/trainers, rain cape, whistle, torch, fire source

team: compass, water bottle, first-aid kit and, very important: a camera or a phone with a camera.

To determine the winners of the Trophy, the scores of the best-placed teams in any 4 categories will be added together, cumulating the points they obtained in the events: Regularity, Orienteering and Theory Tests.
