Step into the Fairy-Tale Land of the Retezat Massif!

The time has come to step into the land of fascinating tales about the first people of the Retezat, lakes, brave lads, gentle maidens, outlaws, winged dragons, dwarf dinosaurs and even giants… savour everything around you and you will be a winner!

From 4 to 6 August, the fifth stage of the "Ștafeta Munților" (the Mountain Relay) National Mountain Tourism Championship, the Via-Retezat Trophy, organised by Asociația de turism montan Via-Retezat, will take place in Retezat National Park.

The structure of the Retezat mountain, with its flat shape, gives the impression that it has been cut off (retezat), which in Romanian culture has given rise to many legends and folk tales.

This year, participants will reach one of the 14 peaks above 2,500 m in the Romanian Carpathians: Păpușa Peak – 2,508 m, the second-highest peak in the Retezat Massif.

You can sign up for activities such as: mountain raid (covering a mountain route in the area within a set time), orienteering, cultural, surprise events and, for the experienced, CROSS TRAIL.

CROSS TRAIL is an individual event contested in two categories: Junior boys and girls up to 20 years of age, Senior men and women over 20. It is scored according to the SM (Ștafeta Munților) rules.

Depending on their age and experience, participants can register in one of the seven competition categories: Elite, Open, Veterans, Juniors, Women, Seniors and Family – the latter being the most successful category this year, in which parents educate their children in an eco style and teach them about the geography of our country through play.

The hike, the event eagerly awaited by everyone, will give participants the chance to photograph and film the more than 10 lakes and tarns as well as the main ridge of the Retezat, with peaks over 2,400 m in altitude – Retezat, Peleaga (2,509 m) and Colții Pelegii, Bucura, Vârful Mare, Custurii... – which can be admired from the ridge.

For parents and children, the organisers have chosen a route suited to their age: Stâna de Râu – Tăul Țapului.

Event supported by: Munții Noștri, Librăria Diverta Petroșani, the Huila V.J. Paroșeni Trade Union, Mama Mia, Kadet Mountain Deva, Himalaya Brașov, Real Automotive N, Pensiunea Adriana Staja, Retezat National Park, Pui Commune Hall and Council, Salvamont Hunedoara, the Hunedoara Mountain Gendarmerie, Marketing România and Focus Print.ro.

The tent camp will be set up in the Stâna de Râu Valley next to the Stâna de Râu Refuge, located in a clearing that is reached on foot, about 10 minutes from the car camping area.

Participation in this event is free of charge; for more details we invite you to visit www.stafetamuntilor.ro.
