The Decisive Event, the Relayof the Romanian Orienteering Federation

Published on

After 3 days of intensive running we come to the decisive event, the Relay. This event is completely different from the other 3 events in the National Foot Orienteering Championship organised by the Romanian Orienteering Federation, because a team is made up of 3 people, regardless of whether it is a mixed team or not. The start was given at 10:30 and was a mass start, meaning that all the competitors set off at the same time. Each team member had a different course; after completing the whole course and punching every point marked on the map, they returned to the camp, to the changeover zone, to hand the relay over to the next team member, and this was repeated until all 3 members had completed the set course.
Because of the long, 19 km and extremely difficult course, many were disqualified.
The appeal of this sport lies in its extraordinary variety, as it is regarded both as a sporting competition and as a recreational activity, in which people from 7 to 70 take part. It is first and foremost an adventure, a call addressed to athletes and ecologists alike, as well as to all those who enjoy a day spent in nature.
The challenge of reading a map and using a compass technically, together with the tension of competing, makes problem-solving increasingly difficult over the course of the competition.
